When JAWS hit theaters in 1975, the film brought with it a sea change in the movie business: the summer blockbuster. Steven Spielberg’s tale of a voracious shark munching on unsuspecting beachgoers was such a smash, it couldn’t help but inspire imitators. Join us for a weekend salute to this masticating menagerie which also includes PIRANHA, TINTORERA: KILLER SHARK, ALLIGATOR and a sneak preview of Larry Fessenden’s new horror-on-the-water thriller, BENEATH.
Among the many series former Cinematheque programmer Chris D. brought to our screens was “Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film,” and now this longtime fan of Asian crime movies has written the definitive book on the subject. We’re pleased to welcome Chris D. back to the Cinematheque for two nights of hoodlums and hitmen from Japan, including PALE FLOWER, MASSACRE GUN, EVERYTHING GOES WRONG and KILLERS ON PARADE.

Created by Universal, the patented process of Sensurround pumped up the bass frequencies during action sequences so that audiences didn’t just hear sound vibrations, they felt them. Whole theaters rumbled when seismic disaster struck in EARTHQUAKE, thanks to specially installed speakers reaching frequencies below what the human ear can hear but powerful enough to be felt. Extra speakers will be installed in the theater to recreate the authentic effect for our Sensurround screenings, which also include BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!
When Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert died in April, the world of movies lost its most influential, enthusiastic commentator. In the coming months, the American Cinematheque will pay tribute to Roger Ebert with screenings of his favorite films, beginning with THE TREE OF LIFE, VERTIGO and CITIZEN KANE.
