UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS AND DOWNTON

Among the most popular television series of recent years, “Downton Abbey” follows the live of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in early 20th-century England. Created by Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes (GOSFORD PARK), the worldwide phenomenon now becomes a grand motion picture event, as the Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for a royal visit from the King and Queen of England – an event that threatens to turn the natural order of the estate upside down, unleashing secrets and scandals.

DOWNTON ABBEY follows in the hallowed footsteps of “Upstairs, Downstairs,” the BBC production seen in America on the PBS Masterpiece Theatre anthology series hosted by Alistair Cooke. While that show opened many U.S. viewers’ eyes to the rich dramatic possibilities of stories set among the wealthy and their hired help, that terrain has also been explored on the big screen to fine effect both before and since the early 1970s TV landmark.

In Depression-era comedy RUGGLES OF RED GAP, Charles Laughton stars as an English valet struggling to bring order and refinement to his Wild West household. FRANKENSTEIN director James Whale proves adept at romantic comedy with BY CANDLELIGHT, in which butler Paul Lukas is mistaken for his boss by a young woman. In Alfred Hitchcock’s REBECCA and Carol Reed’s THE FALLEN IDOL, servants Judith Anderson and Ralph Richardson play key roles in mysterious deaths. No one is murdered in the Oscar-nominated THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, but the relationship between head butler Anthony Hopkins and housekeeper Emma Thompson is also enigmatic.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.
