LIGHTNING STRIKES: A JERRY BRUCKHEIMER RETROSPECTIVE
Double Feature! Director Michael Mann In Person!
THIEF / AMERICAN GIGOLO
Discussion between films with THIEF director Michael Mann, moderated by Geoff Boucher.
World Premiere of 2K Restoration!

THIEF
1981, Park Circus/MGM, 122 min, USA, Dir: Michael Mann

Director Michael Mann's stunning debut feature stars James Caan as the professional thief of the title, a man whose desire for domestic tranquility clashes with his obligations in the underworld. Featuring a cast of standout supporting performances, with Jim Belushi as Caan's partner, Willie Nelson as his mentor and Robert Prosky as the deadly boss he has to please. Actual thieves served as technical consultants on the film, supplying an array of tools used in real heists.

AMERICAN GIGOLO
1980, Paramount, 117 min, USA, Dir: Paul Schrader

Julian Kaye (Richard Gere) is a suave, Armani-clad male prostitute embroiled in a steamy affair with a senator’s wife (Lauren Hutton) when he becomes the prime suspect in the murder of one of his previous clients. Helmed by RAGING BULL scribe Paul Schrader, this stylish, ’80s-chic crime drama is driven by Gere’s layered portrait of the vulnerable, hopelessly empty playboy. “Call Me,” the endlessly catchy Blondie theme song written for the film, is both a literal reference to the protagonist’s work as a callboy and an allusion to the brilliantly rendered, desperate yearning for human connection that underlies practically every relationship in this seminal film.

Screening formats: 2K DCP (THIEF) and HD (AMERICAN GIGOLO)
