THE ICONOGRAPHY OF ANDREI TARKOVSKY

“The beautiful is hidden from the eyes of those who are not searching for the truth,” Andrei Tarkovsky wrote in his book Sculpting in Time. Perhaps the greatest Russian filmmaker since Eisenstein, Tarkovsky (1932-1986) searched for truth and, over the course of seven features, discovered beauty rarely glimpsed in the hurried pace of contemporary cinema.

Working within the strictures of the Soviet film industry taught Tarkovsky how to comment on modern social and cultural conditions without directly addressing them, and his work is rich with symbols and imagery whose meaning reveals itself over time. Through the story of a 15th-century icon painter, ANDREI RUBLEV grapples with the roles of art and religion in society, while classics SOLARIS and STALKER explore dreams and desires within a science fiction framework. If he is most famous for such otherworldly psychodramas, Tarkovsky gives even familiar contemporary locales a strange twist - the Italy of NOSTALGHIA feels somehow different when seen through the lens of the Russian filmmaker. Ultimately, the mysterious terrain Tarkovsky chose to explore was the frontier of the human soul.
