STARRING EUROPE: NEW FILMS FROM THE EU

Presented by the American Cinematheque and the consulates of EU members: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain.

Sponsored by Bank of the West.

Additional support from Otto Nemenz International Inc.

Created in the aftermath of World War II, the EU is a unique economic and political partnership of 28 European countries that together cover much of the continent. What began as a purely economic union has evolved into an organization spanning policy areas and promoting cultural ties. Now in its third year, the EU Film Festival provides an opportunity for international cinema enthusiasts in Los Angeles to celebrate and discover contemporary films from across the European Union.

Spotlighting festival award winners from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain, the short and feature films here embody the rich heritage and diversity of cinema from Europe. With talent from the films invited to speak at screenings and an opening-night reception, this is an ideal way for expats and Los Angeles residents alike to experience these European delicacies.

The Los Angeles premieres of short films open all but one night of the series, including Sundance winner “Peacock” and such distinctive animated treats as “Sunday Lunch” and “The Light Eater.” Among the features, acclaimed veterans Felix Van Groeningen and Jerzy Skolimowski return with sibling rivalry tale BELGICA and vignette-based ensemble drama 11 MINUTES, respectively. Emerging talent also shares the spotlight, with the dark romantic fantasy LIZA, THE FOX-FAIRY and documentaries THE LAST BLACK SEA PIRATES and THE LAND OF SONGS all the work of first-time feature directors. Comedy ALL THE BEST serves up a Christmas with singing and poisoning, while the distinctive dramas include looks at a youth-obsessed Greek doctor (SUNTAN), a techno-obsessed East German gang (AS WE WERE DREAMING) and a grief-stricken Austrian teen (THOSE WHO FALL HAVE WINGS).

Series programmed by Gwen Deglise, Louisa Cone, Maelle Legagnoux, Sergio Zaciu and the EU members. Program notes by John Hagelston, Louisa Cone and Sergio Zaciu.

Guests joining us in person with their films include director Aldona Watts (LAND OF SONGS) and actor David Sakurai (LIZA, THE FOX-FAIRY).
