SCREWBALL COMEDY CLASSICS

The Cinematheque again caps off the year with some of the funniest and most sophisticated films ever to hit the big screen, beginning with a pair of double features by two titans of screwball comedy. European émigré Ernst Lubitsch blends sparkling dialogue, romantic complications and larceny in TROUBLE IN PARADISE, in which two corners of a love triangle are occupied by high-class thieves. Charles Boyer romances Jennifer Jones in CLUNY BROWN, the final film completed by Lubitsch and seen here in a new 4K digital restoration.

Our Howard Hawks double feature begins with HIS GIRL FRIDAY, pitting ace reporter Rosalind Russell against editor - and former husband - Cary Grant. Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck play a professor and a nightclub singer on the run, respectively, in Hawks’ BALL OF FIRE; Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett penned its sizzling screenplay.

Carole Lombard stars in a pair of screwball favorites. She plays a successful Hollywood actress pursued by down-on-his-luck Broadway director John Barrymore in TWENTIETH CENTURY. In TRUE CONFESSION, Lombard is a compulsive liar who hopes to help attorney-husband Fred MacMurray by confessing to a crime she didn’t commit; Barrymore’s great profile appears in this film as well. And our screwball series comes to a riotous close with the annual New Year’s Day arrival of Marx Brothers Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo in HORSE FEATHERS and ANIMAL CRACKERS.

Series compiled by Grant Moninger and John Hagelston. Program notes by John Hagelston.
