LOVE & FRIENDSHIP
2016, Roadside Attractions, 92 min, USA, Dir: Whit Stillman

Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan serves as the basis for this deliciously tart comedy of manners reuniting THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO costars Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny as scheming best friends Susan Vernon and Alicia Johnson, respectively. While weathering the storms of scandal at her in-laws’ estate, recently widowed Lady Susan rushes to marry off her daughter (Morfydd Clark) in order to keep a potential husband (Xavier Samuel) for herself. Stillman’s portrait of a “serpent in Eden’s garden” brims with exquisite period detail and witty dialogue. “A supremely elegant and delicately filigreed adaptation.” - Justin Chang, Variety.

THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO
1998, Universal, 113 min, USA, Dir: Whit Stillman

Writer-director Whit Stillman concludes his “doomed bourgeois in love” trilogy with this semi-autobiographical dramedy set in the early 1980s. Recent college graduates Alice Kinnon (Chloë Sevigny) and Charlotte Pingress (Kate Beckinsale) spend their days working their way up the ladder at a New York publishing house and their nights dancing and romancing at a Studio 54-style nightclub. This endearing portrait of dawning adulthood features a talented ensemble cast (including Robert Sean Leonard, Chris Eigeman and Jennifer Beals), scintillating banter and a soundtrack filled with disco classics.
