LAURA DERN: A LIFE ON SCREEN

Laura Dern practically grew up in front of the camera; her first onscreen appearance was as a 6-year-old in WHITE LIGHTNING. Fast forward a few decades and Laura Dern has become one of the most versatile actresses in film and TV today, with an Emmy, several Golden Globes and a pair of Oscar nominations to her name. Dern has breathed life into a host of complex characters, from substance abusers to scientists, amateur sleuths to oversexed sirens.

She emerged as a forceful screen presence in the 1980s. SMOOTH TALK provided one of her first leading roles; Dern is mesmerizing as restless teenager Connie, whose life changes in the course of an evening when she meets convertible-driving stranger Treat Williams. Shortly after that breakthrough, the actress made the first of several films with director David Lynch: BLUE VELVET finds Dern as a detective’s daughter drawn into the brutally perverse world simmering beneath the surface of a North Carolina town. As Lulu in Lynch’s WILD AT HEART, Dern plays a volatile lover opposite Nicholas Cage, the two fleeing police and the gangsters hired by Lulu’s own mother to liquidate her boyfriend.

Dern proved equally convincing playing adult characters. In RAMBLING ROSE, she delivers an Oscar-nominated turn as an orphaned housekeeper in search of affection wherever she might find it in Depression-era Georgia. The title role in CITIZEN RUTH sees her pulled in opposite directions by the abortion debate, with a lived-in performance that would elicit empathy from either side. There are no carbon copies in this actress’s work - no one-dimensional characters propped up by archetypal clichés.

MARRIAGE STORY is Laura Dern’s latest triumph. In the new family drama from Noah Baumbach, she portrays a high-profile divorce attorney with a front-row seat to the pains of separation. Like all her characters, from the lovable to the loathsome, Nora Fanshaw is drawn with meticulous care and startling sensitivity. It’s another example of Dern’s remarkable range as an artist and the acuity with which she chooses projects that provoke and uplift, question and console.
