Martial Arts Double Feature!
LADY SNOWBLOOD / LADY SNOWBLOOD: LOVE SONG OF VENGEANCE
LADY SNOWBLOOD
SHURAYUKI-HIME
1973, Janus Films, 97 min, Dir: Toshiya Fujita

Trace the bloodline of Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL back a generation and you’ll no doubt find this bravura action film in its ancestry. In late 19th-century Japan, a brutal gang massacres a family, leaving a single survivor to give birth to a girl (Meiko Kaji) whose sole focus is revenge. Violent, beautiful and endlessly inventive, this is one of the all-time great samurai films.

LADY SNOWBLOOD: LOVE SONG OF VENGEANCE
SHURAYUKI-HIME: URAMI KOIUTA
1974, Janus Films, 89 min, Dir: Toshiya Fujita

This sequel to the brilliant cult thriller finds Yuki (Meiko Kaji) arrested and sentenced to death for her string of revenge killings. But government authorities offer her one chance to escape the gallows – a dangerous mission to assassinate a would-be revolutionary. The political battles of turn-of-the-century Japan prove a compelling backdrop to this tale of shifting loyalties, which, like its predecessor, is peppered with ingenious and bloody action sequences.
