October 5-7, 2012
We are proud to present the sixth German Currents Showcase, featuring some of the best German films of the past year. The selections feature a wide array of genres, from sharp, elegant dramas to breezy comedies and fascinating documentaries. Kicking off the series is David Wnendt’s COMBAT GIRLS, a teen drama following two very different young women crossing paths, followed by a discussion with actress Alina Levshin and an opening-night reception. Also included in the series is Martin Persiel’s documentary THIS AIN’T CALIFORNIA, which looks at the subversive skate scene in the GDR, headed by Denis “Panik” Panicek; Hans-Christian Schmid's moving family drama HOME FOR THE WEEKEND, nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2012; Christian Schwochow's psychological backstage thriller CRACKS IN THE SHELL, a festival favorite of 2011 that garnered a Best Actress prize for Stine Fischer Christensen at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival; and Hendrik Handloegten’s suspenseful drama SUMMER WINDOW, following a couple trying to survive the grief of losing a friend, which was nominated for three German Film Awards.
The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles will also help us celebrate the Egyptian Theatre’s 90th anniversary later in October with a screening of 1922 German silent film NOSFERATU, with live musical accompaniment!
All films in German with English subtitles.
Series compiled by Fareed Majari and Daniel Chaffey. Program notes by Barbara Lerenard and Beth Hanna.
