At 3PM, doors open and vendors Clever Vintage Clothing and Mr. Charles will have Tiki-themed clothing, jewelry, and knickknacks for sale in the lobby. You can also buy a copy of Sven Kirsten's latest book to have signed.
4:00 PM - "Don The Beachcomber & The Origins of the American Tiki Bar"
Tiki guru Sven Kirsten (author of Book of Tiki) will give an illustrated presentation (60 min.) about the charismatic world traveler, Donn Beach aka Ernest Gantt, the originator of the Tiki Bar with his 1934 Don the Beachcomber bar (on McCadden Place across the street from the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood!). He is credited with the invention of over 80 (mostly rum based) cocktails such as the Zombie - which everyone 21 and over, will have an opportunity to taste at the break. A Q&A with the audience will follow.
Before the break, Marie King of The Tonga Hut will speak about the Tiki cocktails that will be available in the lobby. Author Ed Rampell will also give a brief introduction to the afternoon's feature ENCHANTED ISLAND.
5:00 PM - Book Signing w/ Sven Kirsten & Tiki Cocktail Tasting!
Following the presentation, Sven will sign copies of his latest book Tiki Pop, America Imagines Its Own Polynesian Paradise (Taschen), published in connection with an exhibition at the prestigious Musée du quai Branly. Author Ed Rampell will also be signing copies of his book The Hawaii Movie and Television Book. A limited quantity of books will be available for sale by Larry Edmunds Bookshop in the lobby beginning at 3PM and continuing during the signing.
