Deconstructing ROSEMARY: Master Class In Screen Direction

This event is now sold out! An encore presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30th. We encourage those attending the October 30th seminar to view ROSEMARY'S BABY on the big screen when it shows at the Egyptian Tuesday, October 29th!

“This Is No Dream! This Is Really Happening!”

Roman Polanski’s ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968) is continually ranked with (and sometimes just ahead of) Friedkin’s THE EXORCIST (1973), Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), Murnau’s NOSFERATU (1922) and Hitchcock’s PSYCHO (1960) as the greatest “Horror Film” ever made.

However, when it comes to all-encompassing cinematic vision in any film genre, it is hard to find a more accomplished piece of screen direction than Roman Polanski's ROSEMARY'S BABY.

Through the artistically exacting eye of its primary creator, ROSEMARY’S BABY remains one of the few films in the history of cinema where every department of filmmaking - art direction, color design, composition, costume design, editing, make up design, mise-en-scene, music, performance, screenwriting, sound design - is carefully attuned to elicit the purest dramatic effect from its audience.

Our DECONSTRUCTING ROSEMARY seminar is intended for both filmmakers and film lovers as a Master Class in Film Direction and as a rare opportunity to discover how visionary filmmakers embed their personal and artistically interpretive voice into all aspects of visual and aural creation. Just in time for the Halloween season, we will actually be dissecting ROSEMARY scene by scene (and sometimes shot by shot and visual signifier to visual signifier) to reinvestigate how directorial choices made in both production and post-production elicit such a chilling response in the viewer.

• How does ROSEMARY’S BABY take primary elements of scene construction and blend them to have such a powerful effect on the audience?

• How does ROSEMARY’S BABY deconstruct and challenge genre horror film conventions to find many of its most significant thrills?

• How has ROSEMARY’S BABY managed to survive the title wave of horror films and torture porn of the last decade to continually connect with contemporary audiences?

***Please Note: We will not be watching ROSEMARY’S BABY in its entirety. Seminar attendees are encouraged to view the whole film in advance of attending the seminar.

Visual Consultant Thomas Ethan Harris leads a Director's Workshop that asks filmmakers to move beyond traditional visualizing practices to explore the true glories of reinterpreting the cinematic scene to include more personal and artistic sheen.

So before you finish writing that script, before you shoot that film, take this one of a kind, extremely motivating Director’s Workshop designed to get you back in touch with all of your creative instincts so that you can make the film you intended to make in the first place and ultimately score the career you want…and deserve!

Film clips will be used to inspire an open dialogue with the audience.

Tickets: $20 General, $15 Student/Senior, $12 Members. This event is now sold out.
