CRONENBERG WITH CRONENBERG: A RETROSPECTIVE OF THE NEW FLESH
Presented by the American Cinematheque and Beyond Fest. Co-presented by Telefilm Canada, the American Cinematheque’s partner for the annual Canada Now film festival, and with the support of the Consulate General of Canada

Before he exploded onto the scene with his debut commercial feature, SHIVERS (known in the U.S. as THEY CAME FROM WITHIN), the history of horror and sci-fi hadn’t really seen anything like David Cronenberg. His style and concept of "body horror" were enormously influential, from Ridley Scott’s chest-bursting ALIEN to countless low budget American, Italian and Japanese horror films that followed.

It’s hard to imagine a filmmaker of Cronenberg’s intellectual weight and disturbing sensibilities being allowed comparable free rein by American producers. Indeed, it was a function of the dramatically small number of Canadian filmmakers in the seventies that Cronenberg was able to not only get partial financing from the Canadian Film Board, but also find kindred spirits among such producers as Andre Link, Ivan Reitman, Victor Solnicki, Pierre David, Claude Heroux and David Perlmutter. Without this fertile environment, Cronenberg’s brilliant hothouse imagination and obsessions with uncontrollable mutation and physical corruption might never have reached screens.

Since then, whether with box office or award-winning critics’ favorites, David Cronenberg remains a fearless pioneer of all things unspeakable, all things dark and unfathomable, exploring previously uncharted terrain where the human spirit intersects – sometimes benignly, sometimes malevolently – with its biological counterpart.

Our retrospective opens with an all-day “The Shaping of Rage” marathon of the director’s early films, SHIVERS, RABID, THE BROOD, and SCANNERS, presented sequentially and on 35mm. That evening, Cronenberg will be joined by long-time collaborator Howard Shore for a 30th anniversary screening of DEAD RINGERS with director Mick Garris moderating a post screening discussion.

A spotlight shines on giant bugs with a double bill of THE FLY and NAKED LUNCH where Cronenberg will be joined with THE FLY’s Geena Davis and the composer of both films, Howard Shore. Cronenberg’s groundbreaking approach to the distorted world of virtual reality is examined with a double bill of VIDEODROME and EXISTENZ. Cronenberg will be joined in person by composer Howard Shore and his two lead actresses, Debbie Harry and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Director Leigh Whannell will moderate the Q&A between films.

In addition to the screening events at the Egyptian Theatre, there are two double bills at the Aero Theatre: A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE & EASTERN PROMISES and CRASH & SPIDER. All 13 films screened during this Cronenberg retrospective will be on 35mm film.

Our David Cronenberg tribute is part of BEYOND FEST 2018; click here for more films in that series.

We are thrilled to welcome David Cronenberg to the Egyptian Theatre!
