BIRD WATCHING: THE ANIMATION OF BRAD BIRD

Brad Bird began his first animated film at the age of 11, finishing it nearly three years later. The film brought him to the attention of Walt Disney Studios, where, at age 14, he was mentored by Milt Kahl, one of a distinguished group of legendary Disney animators known as the “Nine Old Men.” Bird eventually worked as an animator at Disney and other studios.

Steven Spielberg gave Bird his first opportunity as a screenwriter on Spielberg’s TV anthology show “Amazing Stories,” which led to Bird’s first movie credit as a screenwriter on *BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED. Spielberg also gave Bird his first opportunity to direct with the “Family Dog” episode of “Amazing Stories,” which Bird also wrote and co-produced.

The episode became one of the most popular of the series, and attracted the attention of Gracie Films and Jim Brooks, Sam Simon and Matt Groening, who were just starting to grow a short segment of “The Tracey Ullman Show” into “The Simpsons.” Bird would serve as executive consultant on the first eight seasons of that landmark show as well as the first season of “King of the Hill” - the two longest-running and most celebrated animated series on television.

While he enjoyed the challenge of TV, Bird’s first love was movies, and he finally got his chance to write and direct one: the critically acclaimed 1999 film THE IRON GIANT, which swept the International Animated Film Society’s Annie Awards for outstanding achievement in an animated theatrical feature. The Cold War-set tale of a boy who befriends a robot from space caught the eyes of executives at Pixar Animation Studios, which would produce Bird’s next two films as writer-director – THE INCREDIBLES (2004) and RATATOUILLE (2007). Both were Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and both won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Though he's no stranger to live-action – he directed both MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL and TOMORROWLAND – animation has a special place in Bird’s heart. His latest, INCREDIBLES 2, throws the super-powered Parr clan a new set of challenges, to the delight of audiences around the world. “I think that people see themselves in these characters and that’s why they’ve embraced them the way they have. The INCREDIBLES films are really stories about family,” notes the filmmaker. He again proves that the art of animation can tell stories of any shape or size – the sky’s the limit for Brad Bird.
