BIG JOY: THE ADVENTURES OF JAMES BROUGHTON
2013, Kino Lorber, 82 min, USA, Dir: Stephen Silha, Eric Slade, Dawn Logsdon

Charismatic poet and experimental filmmaker James Broughton was a leading figure in San Francisco’s post-WWII artistic renaissance, as well as a defining voice of the sexual revolution. Broughton’s wide circle of influence becomes clear in this fascinating new documentary, which includes interviews with Pauline Kael (with whom he had a daughter), Jean Cocteau, Harry Hay, Stan Brakhage, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Armistead Maupin and many others. “A revealing portrait of a man who helped to broaden our ideas of what films could accomplish ... [the film] illuminates the artistic and sexual ferment of a vital period in recent American history." -Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter.
