Beyond Fest 2016
Co-presented by Meltdown Comics, Death Waltz Recording Co. and the Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest. Sponsored by Shudder.

BEYOND FEST is the highest-attended genre film festival in Southern California, delivering the best horror, sci-fi, fantasy and badass cinema to Los Angeles. Last year’s highlights ranged from raining chainsaws to midnight DEVILS to $2 paperboys to an ageless Al Pacino to Wes Craven’s last stand - it was absolutely the best of times and one that we knew we had to try to top for the thousands of fans in attendance.

This year we up the ante with more screenings (including more free shows) and we’ve increased the number of West Coast premieres (from 18 to 25). Two truly epic live re-scores bookend both weekends: Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA accompanying martial arts masterpiece THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN and the triumphant return of the maestro, Fabio Frizzi, presenting a completely new score to Lucio Fulci’s seminal THE BEYOND…

For the first time we enter the world of virtual reality, partnering with Dark Corner Studio for three terrifying experiences that will be available to view throughout the festival. And we’re going 3-D for the first time courtesy of the Egyptian Theatre’s new state-of-the-art projection and audio system to bring you the U.S. premiere of Richard P. Rubenstein’s meticulous 3-D conversion of George A. Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD. While the onscreen visuals of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY are already spectacular, minds will be blown even further with a laser show preceding the Kubrick classic – which screens in a brand-new 70mm print with stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood in attendance for a Q&A.

Beyond Fest also offers a rare opportunity to hear from the talent behind both new and classic films. Writer-director Paul Schrader brings one of each to the theater. His latest, DOG EAT DOG, is a crime-gone-wrong tale starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe; it’s paired with TAXI DRIVER, the Oscar-nominated profile of a Manhattan loner for which Schrader penned the script. PHANTASM creator Don Coscarelli joins us for the West Coast premiere of the 4K restoration of that film, followed by the latest installment in the horror franchise, PHANTASM: RAVAGER. And Kurt Russell appears with BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA for a discussion about the 1986 cult favorite moderated by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn.

Los Angeles audiences will get their first chance to see Ti West’s new Western, IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, with director and cast members in attendance for a Q&A. Titmouse Animation mastermind Chris Prynoski joins us for a midnight screening of his feature debut, NERDLAND, along with star Patton Oswalt. Also making its West Coast premiere is THE BAD BATCH, Ana Lily Amirpour’s harrowing follow-up to her acclaimed debut A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT; she appears in person for a post-film discussion.

This year also includes numerous free programs in the adjoining Spielberg Theatre, rechristened the Shudder Theatre after the online video service sponsoring these screenings. Matinee screenings include a George A. Romero double bill of THE CRAZIES and MARTIN and a Cinematic Void double feature on 35mm (STREET TRASH and NEON MANIACS). Homegrown horror is well represented with West Coast premieres of THE VOID and THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, alongside wild new films from all around the world including Australia (DOWN UNDER), France (BEYOND THE WALLS), Japan (SADAKO VS KAYAKO) and Thailand (THE DWARVES MUST BE CRAZY).

Tickets for free screenings will be available the day of each show on a first come, first served basis. Box office opens 90 minutes before the first program of the day. No vouchers accepted for paid programs.

Series programmed by Meltdown Comics, Death Waltz Recording Company, Evrim Ersoy, Jeff Goldsmith, Christian Parkes and Grant Moninger. Program notes by Christian Parkes, Nicole McControversy, Evrim Ersoy, Spencer Hickman, James Branscome and John Hagelston.
