Double Feature!
Architect John Lautner Turns 100 Tribute
Presented with The John Lautner Foundation.

The John Lautner Foundation presents "John Lautner Turns 100," part of a touring series taking place in Los Angeles and Marquette, Mich., including exhibitions, film screenings, home tours, symposia, receptions and more honoring the visionary 20th century architect. The Cinematheque partners for an evening of films about Lautner's work including the feature documentaries THE SPIRIT IN ARCHITECTURE: JOHN LAUTNER & INFINITE SPACE: THE ARCHITECTURE OF JOHN LAUTNER and the short "John Lautner, The Desert Springs Motel" (2007, 10 min.). This evocative short by Sasha Pirker on the Desert Hot Springs Motel, built in 1947 by Lautner and purchased in 2000 by the late writer Steve Lowe, tells the story of the motel's renovation and first guests in decades.

Discussion between films with award-winning filmmaker and editor Bette Jane Cohen, Evelyn Wendel, co-producer of THE SPIRIT IN ARCHITECTURE, cinematographers Dan Kneece and Steven Finestone, and INFINITE SPACE director Murray Grigor, producer Anna Thomas and cinematographer Hamid Shams.
THE SPIRIT IN ARCHITECTURE: JOHN LAUTNER
1991, 60 min, USA, Dir: Bette Jane Cohen

This illuminating journey into visionary architect John Lautner’s world features never-before-seen footage from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin; extensive documentation of his extraordinary buildings; and interviews with historians, critics and Lautner himself, which put his achievements in perspective. In particular, use of his buildings in countless feature films and his Googie coffee shop design demonstrate his important contributions to popular culture.

INFINITE SPACE: THE ARCHITECTURE OF JOHN LAUTNER
2008, 90 min, USA, Dir: Murray Grigor

The lifelong quest of visionary genius John Lautner to create “architecture that has no beginning and no end” is traced in this fascinating documentary telling the story of his brilliant and complicated life - and the most sensual architecture of the 20th century. As a young man, Lautner broke from his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright, and went west to California to forge his own architecture. His life was marked by innovation and inspiration, endless battles with building codes, an accidental leap into the epicenter of pop culture, bitterness at lost opportunities and finally, monumental achievement.
