Art Deco Society Of Los Angeles Historic Lecture Series 2015
“Art Deco Dreams: The History of Fashion in Film 1925-1935” / OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS
Co-presented by the American Cinematheque and the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles

Art Deco Dreams: The History of Fashion in Film 1925-1935,” 60 min.
Art Deco made an impact in many ways all over the world - from architecture to interior design to fashion. Hollywood quickly took notice and recruited fashion designers to become costume designers, and many costume designers influenced fashion design of the era.

In her illustrated presentation, film and fashion historian Kimberly Truhler will chart the evolution of Art Deco costume design - from its origins in 1925, to how it changed while moving toward the Streamline Moderne movement of the mid-1930s. She will discuss the artists behind the design and some of the most influential fashion on film as seen on stars Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, Louise Brooks, Marlene Dietrich, Kay Francis, and Ginger Rogers.

OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS
1928, Warner Bros., 85 min, USA, Dir: Harry Beaumont

Joan Crawford shot to stardom as a good-hearted party girl vying for the affections of millionaire John Mack Brown while golddigging Anita Page lies in wait. Though it was produced at the very end of the silent era (and includes some music and sound effects), the 1920s roar throughout this drama, with flappers Crawford and Page looking their best thanks to George Barnes’ Oscar-nominated cinematography.
