PRIVATE LIFE
2018, Netflix, 124 min, Dir: Tamara Jenkins

The new film from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Tamara Jenkins, PRIVATE LIFE is the bracingly funny and moving story of Richard (Academy Award-nominee Paul Giamatti) and Rachel (Kathryn Hahn), a couple in the throes of infertility who try to maintain their marriage as they descend deeper and deeper into the insular world of assisted reproduction and domestic adoption. After the emotional and economic upheaval of in vitro fertilization, they’re at the end of their middle-aged rope, but when Sadie (breakout newcomer Kayli Carter), a recent college drop out, re-enters their life, things begin to look up.

BEFORE MIDNIGHT
2013, Sony Pictures Classics, 109 min, USA, Dir: Richard Linklater

The third film in Richard Linklater’s trilogy (following BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET) is quite possibly the best in its hilarious, devastating, and ultimately poignant depiction of the complexities of long-term commitment. Eight years after we last saw them, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) have left their previous lives behind to be together at last - but does getting everything they wished for bring them happiness? In answering the question, Linklater crafts his most romantic and unblinkingly truthful film to date.
