RIVER OF NO RETURN
1954, 20th Century Fox, 91 min, USA, Dir: Otto Preminger

Director Otto Preminger’s lusty Cinemascope Western stars Robert Mitchum as an ex-convict battling raging waters, rampaging Indians - and saloon singer Marilyn Monroe! Spectacular outdoor photography (courtesy of DP Joseph LaShelle) and the can’t-miss pairing of Monroe and Mitchum make this one great, guilty pleasure. With Rory Calhoun, Tommy Rettig.

DON’T BOTHER TO KNOCK
1952, 20th Century Fox, 76 min, USA, Dir: Roy Ward Baker

Marilyn Monroe has perhaps her finest dramatic role in this "one night in the big city" drama. A lovelorn airline pilot (Richard Widmark) hopes to reunite with his chanteuse girlfriend (Anne Bancroft) at a Manhattan hotel. Once jilted, he blithely decides to rebound with a comely babysitter (Monroe) working in the hotel. Uh oh, this babysitter is buggy - not surprising, given that her uncle is played by Elisha Cook Jr.!

SOME LIKE IT HOT
1959, MGM Repertory, 119 min, USA, Dir: Billy Wilder

Musicians Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon go on the lam from the Chicago mob, cross-dressing to escape with an all-girl band and creating a situation where luscious Marilyn Monroe doesn’t know if she’s falling for a playboy (Curtis) or a playgirl. Wilder’s insane blend of sexual confusion and flawless slapstick gave Curtis the best comic role of his career. Biggest on-set problem: keeping Curtis and Lemmon from looking too good in women’s clothes.
